I can already see the plane making its ascent, up toward the sun and beyond the scattered white clouds. The city becomes smaller and smaller, and soon you begin to doze off, dreaming...of castles emerging from forests, Mediterranean-style buildings crowding the coast of a crescent-shaped harbor full of yachts and dinghies, ancient and broken theatres and stadiums and places of worship that seem to roar with excitement when you close your eyes...and then you open yours, and you're there.

Berlin: Day 1
Ich bin kein Berliner, aber diese Stadt ist sehr interessant. After saying farewells to Valérie (our cool new Quebecer friend from the previous night out) and Claire (a lovely Parisian girl we met at breakfast), we left Hamburg on a high and just kept it going.
Arriving in Berlin, we took a bus from the Hauptbahnhof across town to our hostel, which gave us our first look at this richly historical city. It was visibly beaten down, with graffiti everywhere and construction going on wherever you looked. Kinda reminded me of LA the more I saw around town, except that graffiti here is more accepted and its historical sites are too many to even begin to name.
That night, we carried on celebrating Joanie's birthday with all sorts of new friends we made at the hostel's unrivaled rooftop bar, which offered a beautiful view of the city. Later, a handful of us ventured out to a club nearby called The Weekender, which also had a cool rooftop bar. One nice plus about Berlin clubs is that you actually are encouraged to not dress too nicely for them. You may even get turned away if you're dressed too well! Most people wear t-shirts and tank-tops and would be just as likely to walk into a beach bar in San Diego. My kinda club!
One extra note worth making: We walked to a nearby park earlier that evening before going out, and happened upon a bunch of concert flyers outside of a large venue in the park. One flyer was for Green Day with guest bands Angels & Airwaves and All Time Low. After some discussion and a quick change in our bookings, we extended our stay to a third night so we could see the show! Turned out to be a fantastic decision, but more on that in the next post. For our first day in town, we made quite the impression. Not sure we've met so many new people on any other single night of the trip so far. T'was a fine birthday celebration, part two.
