Festivals & Events

The summer months in Europe are the busiest--but perhaps the best time to visit Europe. There will be several fun festivals and events going on in August and September in many of the destinations on my list. This page is dedicated to all major activities going on in the places I plan to visit this summer. I welcome any additional suggestions as to what I might be interested in investigating within or nearby or between any of the cities to which I'll be traveling!

1. Edinburgh's Fringe Festival is the largest art festival in the world, and it's held from August 3rd-27th this year. There's plenty more info on the festival on Wikipedia and other sites if you're unfamiliar with this phenomenal festival and would like to learn more. I'm still familiarizing myself with it, but it came highly recommended by a handful of people. It seems I'll be beginning my adventures in Scotland at just the right time, because another fantastic opera, music, theatre, and dance festival is held in August as well: Edinburgh's International Festival.

2. Amsterdam's Grachten Festival is a unique classical music festival that will be held from August 10th-19th this year. The neat thing about this event is that several of the performances are held on boats or near the iconic canals and waterways of the city. I'm very much looking forward to adding a bit of class to my trip while visiting this charming Dutch city.

3. Munich's Oktoberfest is perhaps the most famous festival of them all, and it begins this year on Saturday, September 22nd--a perfect way to wrap up my adventures! There's no doubt you've heard a thing or two about this massive beer gathering, but you may find it quite fascinating to explore the aforementioned site (and this one, too) to see all the offerings and goings-on they've got. This will be a major item to check off my bucket list, for sure!

  1. We just missed the Tattoo in Edinburgh, darn!
Our Drama professor had productions in the Fringe Festival and attended many he enthused about. Lucky you to be able to take advantage of these opportunities.
