I can already see the plane making its ascent, up toward the sun and beyond the scattered white clouds. The city becomes smaller and smaller, and soon you begin to doze off, dreaming...of castles emerging from forests, Mediterranean-style buildings crowding the coast of a crescent-shaped harbor full of yachts and dinghies, ancient and broken theatres and stadiums and places of worship that seem to roar with excitement when you close your eyes...and then you open yours, and you're there.

Glasgow: Day 1
Fan-frickin-tastic first day. Arrived in Glasgow and had a family friend (Sandy) pick us up from the airport and take us out to breakfast. After sending us off on our way with a brief overview of Sauchiehall Street and the nearby pubs and shops, we explored on our own a bit, bought a new umbrella for me (mine was lost in transit), grabbed a drink at O'Neill's (an Irish pub/restaurant) and then met again at Sandy's office building downtown whereupon he gave us a lift back to our hostel so we could finally check into our rooms.
After a failed attempt at an afternoon run, due to typically unpredictable Scottish downpours, we showered up for the evening out with Sandy, his son Ross, Ross's girlfriend Kirsty, and our new hostel mate Max, from Germany.
The six of us enjoyed some fried haggis bites (which were actually quite delicious), fish n chips, and a pint of Tennants, a local ale. After dinner, we set out on a bar-hopping adventure through downtown Glasgow, enjoying a pint here and a mixed drink there. After a few stops and a few hours later, plus loads of lovely conversation and setting plans for Saturday night in Edinburgh with Ross and Kirsty, we headed back to our hostel--courtesy, once again, of Sandy's expert driving and incomparable hospitality. We could not have asked for a more pleasant and warm welcome!
Now that it's sufficiently late (about midnight), I think it's safe to say we've survived our first day and have avoided any potential onset of jetlag. In a few more hours our duo will be become a trio, as Jordan is set to arrive from SF.
